So far so good. After a long hiatus, I'm back.
I have committed myself to quitting before my 60th birthday which will arrive on July 5, 2003. If I can quit before then, I will, but if I don't, I WILL quit on that day.
I have been announcing this to family and friends in order to
build up some pressure to commit. I happened to mention it in
a chat room connected to an on-line cards site and this is what
followed:

pwmeek : promised my wife, and everybody I know (now you)

young : ok I'll make that my quit date too

pwmeek : someone I respect said it's Okay to fail at quitting, but never to quit quitting
young : they say it's easier if you do with someone else
wshostak : Pete inspired me to quit for 5 years
pwmeek : I tried a few years ago; there are remnants of my 'blog on my website, I think
pwmeek : I may revive it
wshostak : that was when you inspired me to quit
young : well here's what the doctor said to do
wizard : Sign a contract saying that if you don't quit you'll donate your Segway to Charity.
pwmeek : heh, or to Omni -- he really seems to want it
young : when you get up delay the first smoke
young : like wait for the coffee to brew
young : don't light up until you really think you need to
young : find something else to do with your hands fo awhile as well
young : also, change where you can smoke
merlin : It's a hard thing to do but I know you can do it Pw

young : or outside
young : and DO NOT deviate
young : I have cut down ALOT
pwmeek : my doc wants me to cut to 2 paks/day before quitting
young : hey count what you are smoking now
pwmeek : then patch, a few smokes and welbutrin for a couple weeks then welbutrin and patch til done
young : and tommorow cut down by 2 or 3
young : a few days later 2 o 3 more
Raw and elliptical, full of typos and abbreviations as chat rooms usually are. I'm grateful for the support.
